The airline quality rating site has again released the world’s safest airlines for 2021. Australian airlines are again the champion.
The Australia-based website AirlineRatings.com measures airline safety based on a number of criteria, namely accident and serious incident records, audits from regulatory and industry agencies, government audits, industry-leading safety initiatives, and fleet age.
Chief editor of AirlineRatings.com Geoffrey Thomas explained that in this era of the COVID-19 pandemic, security is the most important element that consumers see.
“They don’t take it for granted and our rate of assessment has tripled over the past six months on a variety of security issues, not just COVID-19,” said Thomas.
Even in the midst of a pandemic, an assessment of world airlines is still being carried out. There are 385 airlines rated by AirlineRatings.com. AirlineRatings.com then selects 20 airlines with the highest scores.
“The challenge this year is the number of airlines flying, even though our top 20 safest airlines continue to fly or have limited flights,” said Thomas.
The things that are assessed are records of flight accidents, serious incidents and the age of the aircraft that is still in use. Passenger polls and reviews are also taken into account.
Thomas stressed that the 20 airlines had done extraordinary things.
“In fact, there are only a few who reach the top 20, they all stand out,” he said as quoted by CNN.
The report, which was launched on Monday (4/1/2021), named Qantas Airways as the world’s safest airline in 2021. AirlineRatings.com highlighted Qantas’ commitment to retraining pilots before returning to work during the COVID-19 pandemic. Qantas 737 pilots must undergo a six-day course before returning to air, including a day focused on fitness training.
Previously, Qantas also held the title of safest airline in 2014-2017, then 2019-2020. Qantas is also considered capable of maintaining its commitment to safety and innovation for 100 years on the air.
In 2018, AirlineRatings.com could not find a clear winner due to the twin highs. But in 2019, Qantas again emerged as a winner.
